What can you do with R5 these days?

I recently visited Bloemfontein,  in the Free State, for the first time when my boyfriend, his cousins and I found ourselves driving out of Kimberley looking for something to do.

I expected a lot out of this little city based on all the stories I’d heard from those who frequent Bloem.

I’m not sure if it was the damp weather or the place in general but I felt slightly disappointed when we didn’t quite find what we were looking for.

This is until I managed to twist the arms of my three male counterparts. See I managed to drag these poor souls to the National Museum and let me just say this, best decision ever!!

A hidden treasure

A scene from the Archeology exhibition at the National Museum in Bloemfontein
Whether you’re a history nut or not this place is an absolute blast! It doesn’t really seem like much when you look at the building from outside but this place is jam packed with so much stuff.
There are 14 permanent exhibitions on the following topics:
  • African cultures
  • Archeology
  • Birds
  • Bloemfontein/Manguang history
  • Geology
  • Herpetology
  • Historical street scene
  • Invertebrates
  • Mammals
  • Paleontology
  • Astronomy
  • Batho
  • Dreyer hall
  • Live displays

My favourite display from the Historical Street Scene exhibition at the National Museum in Bloemfontein

This museum is an absolute gem the volume of information and the quality of the exhibits is unbelievable and incredibly realistic.

If you’re a Night at the Museum fan you will love imagining all the exhibits in this place coming to life.

But wait there’s more…

A giant bee display

We spent hours in there without realising it and the best part was this, it only cost us R5 per person.

Yeah I know right? R5? What can you do with R5 in the year 2015? For starters you can brush up on your natural history at the National Museum in Bloemfontein.

If you don’t believe me check out their website or better still just stop by.

They’re open from 8am -5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat and 12pm-5pm on Sundays and public holidays.

I will definitely be stopping by this museum next time I’m in Bloem, so I can finish what I started.
